๐Ÿ•Š️When Silence Hurts: A Call to Take Mental Health Seriously

News has emerged of the heartbreaking loss of Godfred Akomaning, a talented Level 400 Petroleum Engineering student at UENR. Known for his brilliance in debating and public speaking, he recently achieved a remarkable milestone—winning the Open Category Championship and being crowned Overall National Champion at the 2025 Ghana Universities Debate Championship (GUDC).

Beyond the accolades, he was a leader, a voice, and an inspiration—having served as former President of the Writers and Debaters Society at Obuasi Senior High Technical School.

Yet, behind this excellence was a silent struggle.

In a deeply personal memoir, Godfred shared that he had long battled mental health challenges—struggles that went largely unseen, unsupported, and unspoken. Over time, the weight became overwhelming, leading to a tragic outcome.

The Reality We Must Face

This is more than just news—it is a painful reminder:

  • Not all struggles are visible.
  • Not all pain is spoken.
  • Not everyone who smiles is okay.

In our schools, communities, and even among our closest circles, many individuals are quietly fighting battles we know nothing about.

๐Ÿง  Why Mental Health Advocacy Matters

Mental health is just as important as physical health—yet it is often:

  • Ignored
  • Misunderstood
  • Or dismissed as weakness

This culture of silence creates a dangerous space where people feel:

  • Alone
  • Unheard
  • And unsupported
  • We must do better.

What We Can Do ?

1. Create Safe Spaces

Let people feel safe to talk without fear of judgment or stigma.

2. Check In—Genuinely

A simple “Are you really okay?” can go a long way.

3. Encourage Seeking Help

Professional help is not a sign of weakness—it is a step toward healing.

4. Be Present

Sometimes, just being there and listening is enough.

๐Ÿ’œ A Message to You Reading This ;

If you are struggling, please know this:

You are not alone.

You are not weak.

And your life matters.

Talk to someone—a friend, a mentor, a counselor, or a healthcare professional. There is help, and there is hope.

๐Ÿ•Š️ As we mourn the loss of a bright and promising individual, let this not end in grief alone. Let it spark awareness, compassion, and action.

Let us build a community where:

  • People are seen
  • Voices are heard
  • And no one suffers in silence

Rest well, Godfred. Your story will not be in vain. ๐Ÿ•Š️
